I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Pope Francis. In my mind he was sincere, real, full of humanity, and cared deeply about the state of the world and the people in it. I remember when he was elected by the Conclave; my good friend and journalist Eric was in Rome covering this for the Canadian news. He sent me a message telling me about what he was experiencing in the rain with the smoke and the cold. It made me feel I was kind of there. Years later I was in Rome and, along with 200 other Canadians, I got to visit the Vatican and receive blessings from the POPE. It was very special.
I always thought he could make a major difference in the Church, but wouldn’t live long enough to see this happen, because of his age when he assumed the position of Pope. But I believe in his own way he made major inroads for many disenfranchised parts of society.
As a man full of humility, he didn’t live at the Vatican, but lived in a guest house off site. He will also be buried, not at the Vatican, but at the church he loved to pray in. The world could take many lessons from this man!
